Scarlet

I swear it was like being carried into a dream the way Mother holds me. I felt like I was floating on air, you know the feeling, right? I shook my head as Mother set me down. I looked around at where I was.

It was a dark… town almost, a town of wolves and other creatures. I saw that we were in front of one cave that had a hollowed out stone in it. That must be our bed, I thought. Mother nudged me along until I collapsed into the hollow and at once I was asleep again. I did feel the presence of my brother pressed against my side, keeping me warm.

My dream was about where I wished I were, a sunny oasis surrounded by other wolves. They jumped around happily in the sand as I watched from the water’s edge. I dove into it and swam around in the spring. Shadow was sitting under a palm tree drinking from a coconut and singing, “Aloha-oi, Aloha-oi, we sing and sing on Hawaii!” I burst into laughter when I saw he was wearing a coconut bra and then I remembered it was a dream and scolded myself for having such thoughts.

Then I got hungry and told him to buy me a sandwich. Why? ‘Cause it’s my dream and I’m too lazy to get it myself. I shoveled down the sandwich and dreamed some more as Shadow did the hula in a grass skirt. I rolled along in the water laughing my head off. Then I swam to shore and woke up into the real world.

“Wake up! Wake up! Scarlet, wake up!” Shadow yelled, thrusting his wet black nose into my face. I flailed at him and yelled sandwich several times before I realized I was awake. I promptly cuffed him on the nose and asked why he had woken me up.

“Because!” he answered, “Look around, we aren’t exactly in familiar territory anymore. And Mom’s gone!”

I looked around and it was true, our mother was nowhere to be found. Fear has a funny way of ruining everything, because, as you will find out, we were very happy to have a new place to play, but after a while we noticed several strange things.

First, we played in the bed area, had fun, and laughed a ton! But then Shadow noticed that what we first had thought were chew toys, turned out to be old, wolv bones. And suddenly, playing in the sleeping corner didn’t seem like fun.

Second, we played in the eating room, and, as in the first room, had a hoot. Our fun was ruined by the discovery of a wolv skeleton under the rug.

Lastly, and this made us terrified, we played right outside the cave, and there were shards of glass everywhere. We kept stepping on them and cutting our feet! But even worse, every time I looked into one I saw a ghastly reflection of me, only I looked like a zombie.

So much for my dream world! In the end, Shadow and I ended up clearing out the bed of bones and huddling in there, waiting for our mother to come back. We watched the creatures that walked by our cave entrance, giving them all names.

A three legged beast walked by, I called him Tress and moved onto the next creature, a purple tentacle wigged monster who I named Leroy. And so this went on for about two hours, in which we encountered twenty eyed beasts, things that could only speak with one syllable words, items that could fly and say, “We’ve got the house surrounded! Cough up the goods and no one gets hurt!”

But by that time we were so scared that I had to leave the bed two times so I wouldn’t wet myself and Shadow had to leave four times! It may not have occurred to you, but our brains have evolved faster than our bodies, so that took away a lot of dignity on our part…

We finally fell into a restless sleep, taking turns to keep watch. Of course Shadow was the one who first saw Mother. He always was the lucky one! When he violently shook me awake again I practically ripped his nose off.

“Ow! Watch it, Scarlet! I just wanted to let you know that Mom is back,” said Shadow.

I quickly apologized and then ran up to Mother panting, “Mother- what- going- on?”

Mother just looked at me and smiled heartily, not replying to my question, but she did have a dazed look on her face. I shivered and yelled, “Mother! Please answer me! Mother?”

Mother snapped out of it and blinked a few times before replying. “Scarlet? Shadow? Is that you?” She searched us and gasped, “It is! Where are we? Oh, yes, I know! We’re at your father’s home!”

I blinked rapidly a few times and realized that if this was our father’s home, then he really did need a housekeeper. I looked around more closely and realized that besides the bones and glass, the place was very comfy looking, despite the mess. I muttered to mother, “Will this be our home from now on?”

Mother nodded and wrapped her tail closely around Shadow and me saying, “This is your home for now.”

I couldn’t help it, I asked, “But where are we? Why are we in such a disgusting place?”

Mother replied, “We are in your father, Silo’s Realm of Darkness. You two will be here a while more.” I cocked my head but said nothing else. Then my stomach let out a HUGE grumble and I burst into tears of laughter.

“So what kind of chow does this place have?” I asked.

“Whatever you want,” Mother said, “we are royalty here. Your father is the king of the dark wolves.”

I gasped and then Shadow began yelling, “Scarlet is a princess! Scarlet is a princess!”

I flitted my eyelashes and said, “And I suppose that makes you my younger brother, the prince. So I inherit the throne! Ha ha!”

Shadow shook his head. “Nuh-uh! Only boys can be kings! DUH!”

“Well then I’ll just be a queen!” I yelled and blew a big fat raspberry at him.

Then Mother got involved and began yelling, “Break it up! Break it up you two!” And then she shoved her bushy tail between us and ordered what I assumed was a waiter to fetch us some roasted elk. My stomach grumbled again as I played anxiously with a bone.

Then the servant came back, bowing and giving us a slab of meat on a flat rock. I grinned and gulped the whole thing down before anyone else could touch it. The servant had to go back and get us another elk so that Shadow and Mother could take a bite too.

Then, once again Shadow got sleepy and Mother curled around us, holding me tight. Shadow licked my head and said, “It’s all gonna be fine, big sis.” Then he closed his eyes and dozed off. I however wasn’t tired, since I slept in- See Shadow! There are advantages to sleeping in! You get to stay up later! - So I slipped out of the bed and into the torch lit cave.

I crept along the walls, passing some gruesome sights that I can’t describe to an innocent reader like you, glancing around corners to make sure I wasn’t followed or spotted.

Then I came across my father talking to a slightly familiar figure in a black cloak. It replied and as I listened I could make out what they were saying. “We are almost ready to launch my plan!” My father said, “As soon as my children are old enough, we will begin the annihilation of the mortal world.”

The figure grunted and Silo grinned. Then the figure whisked away and for a split second, I could see that the creature had a beak, and that its face held a well cloaked guilt.

I shook my head at it and began to pace away. Then suddenly I was jolted and knocked over. I felt a sharp pain shoot up my leg as strange figures grabbed me with slimy tentacles and they threw me against the floor violently. I felt rough hands shove me into what I thought was a sack that smelled strangely.

I yelped a few times but was gagged and then the things carried me into a much warmer place. I felt warm sunlight bounce off my sack and it began to get too hot. Then everything cooled and I was freezing. An icicle formed on my nose when I sneezed and I shivered violently.

Finally, I was let out into a strange room full of what looked like helmets. Strange wolves shoved me into one and slowly I became drowsy. Then the helmet shocked me! I jumped at least a foot in the air when it emitted another brutal jolt. I screamed at the top of my lungs but I’m sure no one heard me, at least no one who could help me.

One after another, shocks went through my body until I couldn’t take it anymore I lashed out and bit whatever I could.

Suddenly I was pinned down by a giant wolv with blue fur. Slowly I realized I couldn’t move. My mind became fuzzy as the wolv said, “Forget your past. The time is now, when you join the forces of the Imagers. You will be our sister. You will be one of us.”

I blinked a few times and looked deep into the wolv’s white eyes. Slowly I responded. “I am one of you.”
